The Journey of Shotokan Karate: From Funakoshi to Enoeda
Karate was introduced to mainland Japan in the early 20th century by Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957), a schoolteacher from Okinawa. Trained under masters Azato and Itosu, Funakoshi brought Karate to Tokyo in 1922, where he demonstrated the art at a martial arts exhibition. He later established the Shotokan style, emphasizing discipline, character development, and the philosophical concept of "empty hand" (kara-te). His teachings laid the foundation for modern Karate-do, and his legacy continues through the Shotokan style practiced worldwide
One of the most influential figures to carry Funakoshi’s legacy into the modern era was Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda (1935–2003). Born in Kyushu, Japan, Enoeda was a gifted athlete who transitioned from judo to Karate after witnessing a powerful demonstration. He trained at Takushoku University and later under the Japan Karate Association (JKA), where he became renowned for his fierce spirit and technical excellence. In 1965, Enoeda moved to the UK, where he became a central figure in the development of British Karate, teaching at the Liverpool Red Triangle Dojo and inspiring generations of martial artists through his dynamic instruction and unwavering dedication

This is a photo of The Late Sensei Enoeda 9th Dan, who our Instructor Sensei Harry Wilson 4th Dan trained and graded under from 1974-8 until his passing in 2003. This photo was taken at Sensei Enoeda's famous London Dojo 'Marshall Street'.It is my joy and passion to keep his name and teachings alive and pass onto the next generation at The Shotokan Karate Dojo.
